
As the age-old shadowy sequences of burning buildings, young men launching bricks, superstores being emptied, political leaders remaining on holiday, police stockades, war erupting, and stock markets falling reach our screens, I wonder if the cliche “history repeats itself” has less to do with politics and social injustice and more to do with lazy scriptwriting.
Dancer/choreographer Jean Abreu is an original rebel dreamer. Brazilian born and UK trained, he received the prestigious Jerwood Award for his first piece of choreography. This title was coined by my designer friend Ahmed Akasha when he facebooked news of Yosra El-Essawy’s exhibition which opens tonight in his studio. It’s also a fitting title for a powerful mixed-media work-in-progress that reconstructs the dividing wall between Palestine and Israel. I was lucky enough to hear Yosra’s personal experiences in Palestine as I helped rebuild the wall in images.
